Holistic Healing: Healing ALL Aspects of Your Life

Holistic Healing: Healing ALL Aspects of Your Life

Good morning lovely you!

I hope you all had a fantastic 4thof July. To my non-American friends, I hope you had a lovely Thursday last week!

Well, as you may have guessed, I am sitting here with a nice cup of tea and a snoozing kitty. I am ready to talk to you more about healing.

When we discuss the topic of healing from cancer, so much focus is given to the physical side of healing, for obvious reasons. But, having been through this journey myself, I’m here to tell you that true health and healing cannot focus solely on the physical body, it MUST incorporate the four pillars of life: Mind, emotions, spirit, and body.

Think of it this way:

Your overall health is like a stool. Your physical body represents the seat of that stool. But whether or not your physical body can support the weight of your life on Earth is really dependent on how sturdy the three legs (mind, emotions, spirit) are underneath.

You simply cannot be entirely healthy if any one of your four aspects is unhealthy. I don’t care how many green juices you drink a week or whether you religiously use a natural sunscreen. If you don’t treat and heal every aspect of your life, you can never fully recover from a health crisis.

Every Part of You is Connected to the Other Parts

The creator created beautiful self-healing machines when he/she created human beings. We are in a continual state of healing. Our bodies are able to heal while we sleep, drive a car, and make our lunch.

But, as I’ve mentioned on this blog many times, we become dis-eased when we deal with chronic stress and trauma. When we get in this state, we get stuck in that fight or flight mode instead of our rest and digest mode – the mode required for our bodies to actually heal from illness and disease.

When this happens, the healing process needs some conscious attention on our part. We need to take a break from life and fix ourselves, much like a woodworker would take a broken stool into his shop and secure the legs and seat. But until those legs are tightly in place, that seat has nothing to cling to.

With this in mind, let’s dive a little deeper into the 4 aspects of our life and talk about some ways we can begin to heal in each one with holistic healing.

Spirit

When I speak of a spiritual life, I am not talking about religion. Our spirit transcends any religion that humanity can come up with. A spiritual life is a connection to our inner self and our inner knowing of a profoundly bigger creator than ourselves.

There are so many things in life that get in the way of this connection. A desire for physical things, greed, money, sex, being career driven or hung up on shallow things. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, and yet our humanness often makes it hard to remember our true selves.

Meditation is one of the absolute best ways to connect with your spirit. Meditation has been shown to decrease our risk of death by stroke and heart attack. People who practice meditation have found that it can change their lives in profound ways.

Try to commit to a meditation practice. You don’t have to be perfect, just promise to give your spirit 20 minutes every day.

Emotion

What’s the quickest way to develop a chronic or deadly disease? Stuff your emotions down. Even the CDC has recognized the power emotions play in the development of disease for God’s sake!

You won’t like what I have to say, most likely, but I’m going to say it any way. There is no easy way to deal with troubling emotions. Not dealing with emotions is how you get into trouble. To get out of that trouble, you have GOT TO FACE YOUR DARKNESS. Facing your darkness won’t kill you, but not facing it absolutely can.

To begin healing emotionally, first realize that your emotions exist. Next, feel them. Let them wash over you and feel whatever comes. Cry if you need. Scream. Hit something. Throw something. Make sure to never harm yourself or others in the process, but let that darkness out however you need.

Do this once and you will prove to yourself that feeling darkness can’t kill you AND you’ll also find out how much better you feel when you deal with it. It’s a bit like not wanting to really clean your house but doing it anyway and then LOVING how clean your house is.

You may also want to check out the Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) or Thought Field Therapy (TFT). This is an absolutely amazing way to release suppressed emotions that are negatively impacting your life choices and health.

Holistic Healing: Healing ALL Aspects of your Life

Mind

What is the mind? It’s not the brain – the brain is a soft and squishy machine, the mind is something other. For the purpose of this discussion, I’ll define the mind as that part of ourselves that thinks, rationalizes and makes decisions.

Our minds can become corrupt like a computer can become infected with malware. Our minds become infected with negative thoughts and limiting beliefs. These impact our emotions (and you know what happens then!) and they also cause us to make unhealthy choices in our lives. Choices like choosing to be in a toxic relationship, eating the wrong foods, smoking too much (or at all).

It’s time to install new programming. To do this begin to pay attention to the thoughts you have each day. Don’t judge them, just become aware of them. When you recognize a thought that doesn’t serve you (I don’t have any energy), STOP and immediately replace that thought (I am finding more energy each day).

Do this over and over. You are forming new mental habits. And that’s what most thoughts are. They aren’t new, they are habits our minds get into. Create new mental habits to make a positive change in your life.

Body

If you heal the other three aspects of your life your health will radically change. To put your health over the edge – a good edge – then you need to clean up your diet and eat anti-inflammatory foods, get plenty of rest, drink clean water and exercise. You know what to do, but are you doing it?

Chances are you aren’t physically taking care of yourself. When your spirit, mind and heart are broken, who cares if you don’t take care of your body?

Do you see how that works?

When your mind, emotions and spirit are healthy and strong, your body’s health naturally follows suit. You naturally, without even having to think about it, make healthy choices because you have become a whole and self-loving, self-caring and self-compassionate person.

If you are struggling with a disease, particularly cancer, please understand it is more than a physical disease, it is a disease of your ENTIRE SELF, and so you must heal your ENTIRE SELF.

Sending light and love…

Identify Those Things You CAN Control

There are a lot of things about the holidays that are out of your control. You will most likely hear other people cheerily talking about their holiday plans and you’ll be bombarded with Christmas music pretty much everywhere you go.

But there are some things you can control that will help you lessen your pain and grief. For instance, if you live alone and don’t feel like decorating your house or a tree this year, that’s okay, you don’t have to do it. If you want to avoid crowds and do minimal shopping online, then that’s what you need to do.

Don’t focus on what you can’t control and instead identify those things you CAN control during the holidays.

Say “NO” When You Need To

There were times during my treatment when I knew I absolutely could not be around anyone. I just didn’t have it in me. And then there were times when I thought I didn’t have it in me, but I pushed myself to be social anyway, and being around friends and loved ones made me feel better and brought me out of my funk.

You need to know what you need in the moment. If you KNOW you are in too dark of a place and you need to be alone and quiet, then say NO to those holiday parties and get togethers. But if you check in with yourself and you don’t get a resounding NO but more of a, “Mmm, I don’t know, I don’t really feel like it…” then it may be if you give yourself a little nudge, you’ll wind up having a good time that LIFTS YOUR SPIRITS!

Don’t Deny Your Feelings

It’s the holidays and everyone seems to be in such good moods, and you hate to spoil the fun with your darkness. You don’t want to feel dark; you want to feel like everyone else seems to.

Denying feelings is an impulse for many (if not most) people. But it’s not healthy and it will truly only make things worse. When we don’t process our feelings, they tend to linger.

Whether you are dealing with your own health crisis, have a loved one who is, or have recently lost someone you love, coping with grief during the holidays can make you feel like you are in a nightmarish funhouse. Everything seems to move in slow motion, people have plastered smiles on their faces, holiday music seems to play from every corner of the Universe, and all you feel like doing is crying.

You are not alone during this time. Sadly, there are many people who are facing loneliness, grief and depression during the holidays.
While there is no magic wand or silver bullet that will make the pain go away, there are some things I have found that make coping a little bit easier:

- Don’t Deny Your Feelings
- Say “NO” When You Need To
- Identify Those Things You CAN Control
- Ask for Help
- Help Others
