Forget Ho-Ho-Ho – Here’s the No-No-No’s of Food

Forget the Ho-Ho-Ho; Here’s the No-No-No’s of Food this holiday season.

Tis the season when just about everyone between the ages of 1 and 92 throws caution to the wind and eats whatever they darn well, please. From cakes and pies to plates full of frosted Christmas cookies, the holidays are the perfect excuse for you to live it up and pack on a few extra pounds.

That is unless you are battling cancer or other serious illnesses. Then eating these disease-promoting foods are NOT what your body needs. If you want to stay away from foods that are loaded with cancer-causing chemicals, toxic heavy metals, GMOs and artificial ingredients, then stay FAR away from the following foods:

Artificially Colored Cookies

Who can resist those plastic packages stuffed full of colorfully decorated Christmas cookies? The thing is, any prepackaged baked good you buy is going to be artificially colored and very bad for you. Those synthetic green and red dyes are festive, yes, but also toxic.
While people who are battling cancer and other serious illnesses should stay away from sugary foods as much as possible, if you are going to have a nibble of something here or there, make sure it’s something you or a loved one baked and make your own frosting without and food coloring.

Foods with Vegetable Shorting

Not only is vegetable shortening loaded with trans fats, which have been declared “unsafe for human consumption” by the FDA (it’s not often this organization is this honest), it’s also a source of cadmium, which is a toxic heavy metal with a half-life of almost 30 years in the human body.

But wait… it gets worse…

Most vegetable shortening is made from GENETICALLY MODIFIED SOY!!! So if you feel like eating foods that will make you even sicker while at the same time putting money in the pocket of evil MONSANTO, then by all means, load your grocery cart with store-bought cookies, pie crusts and other prepackaged holiday baked goods.

If you want to take care of your health and not give your money to the devil, then flip that package over and see if it says made with “partially-hydrogenated soybean oil” or “vegetable shortening.” If so, put it back.

Processed Meats

It’s tempting to get one of those ready-made holiday meat and cheese plates. Especially the ones that are shipped to you and require no refrigeration. Ever wonder how meat can stay good for so long in plastic packaging without rotting? It’s because they contain copious amounts of sodium nitrite, a cancer-causing chemical that is known to kill bacteria.
Studies have found that sodium nitrites increase your risk of developing leukemia, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, brain tumors and more. It’s found in nearly all holiday season processed meats, including “gift” sausages and other packaged meats.

Eggnog Drinks with Refined Sugars

If you were to actually read the ingredients list on most commercially sold holiday eggnog drinks, you’d find that:
A) Most don’t even contain eggs, and…
B) A majority contain high amounts of high-fructose corn syrup.

The only thing nutritious in eggnog is the spices of nutmeg and cinnamon that are traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Unfortunately, most store-bought brands of eggnog are made with artificial flavors instead of the real thing.
So, if you want eggnog this holiday season, best to make it yourself, or get someone else to do it.

Commercial Stuffing – This is a no-no-no, my friends!

You might think it’s okay to use a store-bought brand stuffing to help make holiday dinners easier. But did you know that commercially made stuffing contains a lot of monosodium glutamate, better known as MSG?

MSG is a KNOWN neurological poison that causes neural cell death. So, if you stuff your face with commercially bought stuffing, you are loading your body with neurotoxins. Again, it’s better to make your own stuffing from scratch or ask a family member to make it and bring it with them.

Remember, nothing is as sweet as vibrant health!

  1. Yes. Thank you for these no no reminders but also the reminder that it’s ok to enjoy some baked goods as long as they are homemade. I just ate two of my husbands delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and felt badly about it but now I realize that it’s ok as I don’t eat them every day. Like you said, we have to live a little.

Denying feelings is an impulse for many (if not most) people. But it’s not healthy and it will truly only make things worse. When we don’t process our feelings, they tend to linger.

Don’t Deny Your Feelings

It’s the holidays and everyone seems to be in such good moods, and you hate to spoil the fun with your darkness. You don’t want to feel dark; you want to feel like everyone else seems to.

Denying feelings is an impulse for many (if not most) people. But it’s not healthy and it will truly only make things worse. When we don’t process our feelings, they tend to linger.

Whether you are dealing with your own health crisis, have a loved one who is, or have recently lost someone you love, coping with grief during the holidays can make you feel like you are in a nightmarish funhouse. Everything seems to move in slow motion, people have plastered smiles on their faces, holiday music seems to play from every corner of the Universe, and all you feel like doing is crying.

You are not alone during this time. Sadly, there are many people who are facing loneliness, grief and depression during the holidays.
While there is no magic wand or silver bullet that will make the pain go away, there are some things I have found that make coping a little bit easier:

- Don’t Deny Your Feelings
- Say “NO” When You Need To
- Identify Those Things You CAN Control
- Ask for Help
- Help Others
...

I cannot believe we are almost to the end of October! Before you know it, we’ll be stuffing our faces with stuffing and pie! And while many of us will be lucky enough to enjoy the holiday season with our friends and family, many people will be dealing with grief and sadness at the same time.

It's important to remember that each person has their own journey, and those paths don't always make time for holidays. Whether it's cancer, a breakup, or just a bad situation, we should all try to spread hope and love and life wherever we go.

Deal with Your Stress

We can’t talk about boosting your immune system without talking about stress. Because the truth is, chronic stress is the number 1 enemy of your immune system.

I’ve discussed the “fight or flight” response our body has to stress in other blog posts. But to quickly summarize, when we find ourselves in harms’ way, our body has a chemical reaction that helps us either fight the danger or flee from the danger. This automatic response is what helped our ancestors survive attacks by sabre-tooth tigers and such.

But now we don’t have the same kinds of dangers in our environment. We have mortgage payments, tyrannical bosses, COVID-19, working from home stress and 24/7 media hype! These stressors stay in our environment, which leads to a lengthened chemical response in our body, and that leads to chronic inflammation.

But a prolonged response to stress also suppresses the very immune cells that are needed to fight off infection and illness.

I CANNOT STRESS how important it is to deal with the stress in your life in healthy ways. Meditation is a powerful way to deal with stress. Deep breathing exercises, physical exercise, and spending time in nature are also great ways to deal with stress. And if you find you need to speak to a mental health counselor, do it. Your health is on the line.

If you’re one of my readers that always says, “I know, I know, I should be better about supporting my immune system,” then consider me right now giving you a friendly kick in the pants to just DO IT already!
